This article is all about virtualization of operating systems. In this article, we learn that how to virtualize an operating system on your computer and use them as a real machine. In computing, Virtualization refers to the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device or network resources. Virtualization plays a very important role in our daily life like if you want to test an operating system on your computer but you don’t want to test it on your own real machine then virtualization gives a platform to you where you can test that operating system on your computer without removing your old operating system and it does not affect your real machine when something went wrong on that operating system. So virtualization is a very important component of our daily life.
First of all, we know something interesting facts about virtualization like how virtualization works, when it was created types of virtualization and some examples of virtualization.
1. Beginning of virtualisation
I hope you probably know about virtualization process if you ever divided your hard drive/hard disk of your system into different partitions to store your data. Because partitions help you in divide your data by category. A partition is the logical division of the hard disk or drives to create to separate hard drives. Virtualization began in the 1960s, as a method of logically dividing the system’s resources providing by real machine between different application. By virtualization, we also create an image of an operating system on your computer which works as same as the real machine on your computer. It provides you a platform by which you can run many system images at the same time.
2. How virtualization works
Virtualization is a technology in which an application, operating system, or data storage is abstracted away from the true underlying hardware and software. Virtualization creates a platform which allows you to create an image of anything like an operating system, application, and hard drive also. It divides your computer into two parts one is physical and one is logical. On physical machine or real machine we saw that our main operating system will be worked and on logical machine we can install another operating system and use it as like it was installed on a real machine, not on a logical machine and it also not affect our real machine if the operating system which is installed on physical machine was crashed that no effect will be shown on our real machine. So it varies helpful to us.
3. Types of virtualization
Virtualization has many types some types will be given below.
- Network virtualization
- Data virtualization
- Server virtualization
- Application virtualization
- Desktop virtualization
- Operating system virtualization
4. Examples of virtualization
Now here I will tell you about two software which provides you a virtual platform
- Virtual Box
- VMware Workstation
First of all, we learn about how to set a Virtual Box on your system and then use it. Follow these given below steps to install and set a virtual box on your system.
Step 1: – First of all download Virtual Box setup from the internet and click on the link to download Virtual box for your system.
Step 2: – After that click on the downloaded setup to install Virtual Box on your system. Now you saw that a welcome tab will be open on your screen now simply click on the Next option to proceed.
Step 3: – After clicking on the Next we saw that a custom setup page will be open simply click on the Next option without doing any changes to it.
Step 4: – After that, a warning screen will be displayed on your screen in which simply click on the Yes option to proceed. As the figure is shown below
Step 5: – After that, a windows security pop-up screen will be displayed on your system in which we click on Install option to proceed. As the figure is shown below
Step 6: – After that a new pop-up screen will be displayed on your screen simply choose Yes option in it to proceed Your Virtual Box will be installed now on your system and now you saw that a new welcome window will be open on your screen.
Step 7: – In that welcome screen we simply click on the New option which is displayed at the upper right side corner of that window To set our Virtual Box to run a guest operating system on our computer. As the figure is shown below
Step 8: – Now in next step, it will ask you for giving a name and type of operating system which you want to run on your computer by using Virtual Box also mention a version of operating system in it. As the figure is shown below.
Step 9: – After that in next step will asks you for how much RAM you want to give to run that operating system on your computer according to me if your computer have 4gb RAM then give 1gb RAM to Virtual Box or If your system has 8gb RAM than give 3gb RAM to the virtual box for smooth functioning of virtual machine. As the figure is shown below
Step 10: – After that in next step it will ask you for Hard disk Now simply choose to create a virtual hard disk now and then click on Create option to proceed.
Step 11: – After that it will ask you for hard disk file type now simply choose VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) option and then click on Next option to proceed.
Step 12: – After that it will ask you for Storage on physical hard disk now simply choose Dynamically allocated option and then click on Next option to proceed.
Step 13: – After that, it will ask you for file location and size of the hard disk according to me always give 25gb space for the virtual box it helps in smooth running of your operating system image on your computer.
Step 14: – Now all set your virtual machine will be created now simply set all the settings in the virtual machine by going to setting menu. As the figure is shown below.
Step 15: – Now in setting option, first of all, choose system option in it from the left sidebar and then set all the settings on your virtual machine according to the given below figure.
Step 16: – Now after that choose storage option from left sidebar and then click on the empty option which is given below the Controller: IDE and the choose your iso file from your system to run your operating system in your virtual box.
Step 17: – Now after that choose Network option from the left sidebar and then choose Adapter 2 option and then Click on Enable Network Adapter and then choose Bridged Adapter in front of Attached to option. As the figure is shown below.
Step 18: – Now all settings will be configured in the virtual machine now simply click on OK button and the click on start option from your screen to run a new operating system on your computer. As the figure is shown below.
If your system does not support Virtual Box then use VMware Workstation software for your system to run a new operating system image on it. We will discuss VMware in next article so wait for my next article.
